Most of these are from 2008, when I split time between Tulum and Playa del Carmen. I've been to this region numerous times over the last 20 years and the changes are astonishing. I especially miss the old Playa del Carmen and hanging out at the Dragon Bar at the Blue Parrot until dawn. Now there is a frakking velvet rope.
Got to return to Chichen Itza in 08. No more climbing the pyramid or most of the ruins. Much more crowded now that it made the 7 wonders list. Tulum ruins also are mainly closed to walking on, and you could no longer swim in the old swim spot (there is a new one).
We did like the Tulum area a lot, although it is changing so quick I expect it'll be an ultra expensive, completely changed area in 5 years.
This trip involved my first time in a cenote. Really cool places and if (ok, when) we return I'd like to do more of that.
